BA Applicants

Applicants for Hebrew University BA programs are required to take an approved standardized exam in order to place in a study level: Basic, Lower Advanced, Upper Advanced, or Exempt.

Once the candidate has been placed and has started studying in one of the levels, a course grade of 70 is required in order to progress to the subsequent level; a course grade of 70 in the Upper Advanced level means that the student has reached Exemption level in English.

Approved standardized exams

There are several exams that can serve to place an applicant in an English study level.

1. The English sub-section of the Israeli psychometric test:

Applicants who are required to take the Israeli psychometric test are placed in a level based on their score on the English sub-section of the exam. Applicants who want to try to place in a higher level or reach exemption level can take the Amir or Amiram.

2. The Amir exam:

Like the psychometric test, the Amir exam is administered by the Israeli National Institute for Testing and Evaluation (NITE). It is similar in nature to the English sub-section of the psychometric test but is taken as a separate exam. The Amir may be used in lieu of the English section of the psychometric test, for students who are not required to take the psychometric test, or students may opt to take the Amir in addition to the psychometric test in order to improve their English score and place in a higher level, or place out of the EFL requirement.

3. The Amiram exam:

The Amiram exam is an adaptive, computerized version of the Amir exam. The university offers several dates each year for taking the Amiram exam on the Mt. Scopus campus. The Amiram exam can also be taken in an exam center.

4. Other standardized exams

A TOEFL ibt or IELTS Academic score can be used to place in an English level at the Hebrew University.

Questions regarding other standardized exams or certifications should be addressed to the Admissions Office.

Recognition of English skills courses from other Israeli universities

An applicant who completed an English skills course in another institution of higher education in Israel is requested to submit a document attesting to the completion of the course, including course level, grade, and date of completion, signed by the English unit of the institution, to the EFL Unit.

Important: Upon receiving the request, the Unit will determine whether to recognize the course, and will inform the candidate of their placement in an English level at the Hebrew University accordingly

MA or PhD applicants

MA and PhD applicants who completed their BA in a recognized Israeli institution of higher education will be exempt from EFL skills courses, unless the program requires them to participate in a departmental English skills course.

MA and PhD applicants who completed degree work in institutions abroad are requested to contact Student Admissions via this e-box.
